Artist Profile: Dani

Cyprus Comic Con 2015 will feature an incredible gathering of talented local and international artists! We know you are curious to get to know them and look at their work, which is why we decided to make use of the time we have until the event to introduce them to you!

The first creative we are proud to feature on our website is called Dani, a comic book artist from Athens, Greece. You can follow Dani’s work on Facebook and Instagram.

“Dani was born in Athens, Greece in 1992 and she is currently a student at Athens School of Fine Arts. She has been making comics for quite a while now and has participated in a number of exhibitions, competitions and conventions over the years. Dani is the creator and designer of Tales from the Strips, a self-published series that won the People’s Choice Award at the Greek Comics Awards 2015. She loves her cats and travelling around the world.”

Dani will be one of the featured artists at this year’s Cyprus Comic Con and we are very excited to have her!

Artist Applications Announcement

To all the artists that have applied to participate in Cyprus Comic Con 2015:

First of all, we are happy to announce that our team has started processing and replying to artist applications so make sure to check your inbox for your results!

The approved artists that will be showcasing their work at this year’s convention have been divided into two categories:

1) Professional or semi-professional artists that are on their way to being published or have been working on their own self-published books and comics. These artists will have their own table at the convention.

2) Upcoming, talented new artists and skilled fan art hobbyists. For this group of artists we have created an area called the Artists Corner, where they will be able to network, share knowledge and inspire each other! These artists will be given shared table space at the convention.

Please do not be disappointed if you are selected to be in Artists Corner, as both sections will have equal opportunities for promotion and you can look forward to taking part in fun drawing activities during the convention!

We believe our decision to be fair, as it will allow for more local artists to feature at the Con.

If you have any questions regarding your application or require more information, please email us at: team@cypruscomiccon.org

“Filoxenia” welcomes Cyprus Comic Con 2015!

The countdown to Cyprus Comic Con 2015 has begun! The date has been confirmed to be August 29th and the event will be running all day (09:00-21:00). The Cyprus Comic Con organising committee has announced that this year’s event will be held at Filoxenia Conference Centre, in Nicosia.

“Filoxenia Conference Centre features large and commodious event spaces that can fulfill the Comic Con requirements. The building’s design allows for multiple events to take place simultaneously, each at their respective areas. This is ideal to accommodate for the various tournaments and other activities that will be scheduled for the day. Furthermore, Filoxenia has the necessary facilities and equipment that is required for such a demanding event and therefore is more than suitable to host the second and even bigger than last year Cyprus Comic Con!” said Peter Hvass, member of the organising committee.

A number of esteemed and distinguished Cypriot and international creators from every end of the Pop-Culture spectrum have been invited to visit this year’s Cyprus Comic Con. These special guests’ names will be announced shortly.

Identically to last year, a diverse selection of artists, both local and international, will have the opportunity to promote and showcase their work to the general public at the convention. In addition, the event will feature a mini short film festival, seminars and workshops, video game and trading card game tournaments, a cosplay competition, a comics and games bazaar and many more surprises in store, soon to be announced by the Cyprus Comic Con team. Additionally, a number of video game and comic book stores will be present at the convention, offering a vast selection of comics, video games, action figures and other collectibles for sale.

The online registration process for the cosplay competition is already underway. Similarly, artists wishing to showcase their work at the convention are currently sending in their applications, while participating store registrations are also ongoing. For more information, interested persons can contact Mr. Tony Michaels (99-327736), or visit the Cyprus Comic Con website (www.cypruscomiccon.org).

Neil Gibson reviews CCC ’14

I believe in team work. Indeed Comics are all about team work because most good comics are born when a writer and an artist work together to create something special. Cypriots seem to love telling me that organisation in Cyprus can be a little lacking and that teamwork is rare. Well, you could have fooled me!

The organisation behind the Cyprus Comic Con was superb! I have been to large cons in many countries which didn’t have anywhere near the smooth operations I saw. Slick adverts, professional videos, tempting displays, interesting talks, artists and dancers, a master of ceremonies and the most fun cosplay judging I have ever seen. The fact that this was Cyprus’s first ever con made it even more impressive.

But more than all the organisation it was the atmosphere. People were so happy just to be there and to take part. Everyone was smiling this con was by fans for fans. In fact I would like to share one story. Just before the end of the cosplay parade, one of the attendants grabbed the microphone. He wasn’t supposed to but he seized the moment. This is the gist of what he said

“I would just like to say that when I first heard about comic cons, I thought ’what a cool thing. I wish something like that could come to Cyprus’. I never thought it would and yet, now it’s here. You’ve done it. I just want to say thank you to the organisers for making my dream come true.”

His words alone were moving. But when the whole room erupted with cheers and applause, well, I just felt proud that I could be a part of something so touching.

Going back to how I started my review, I believe Cyprus comic con 2014 was an outstanding success because of the team involved. The volunteers put their heart and soul into the event and I this is just the start. This event will run for decades and it couldn’t have a better team running it because, just like the very best comics out there, these guys have worked together to create something special indeed…
