CCC celebrates local genre filmakers with open air screenings

The 2014 edition of the Cyprus Comic Con celebrates local genre filmmakers with an open air screening showcasing some of the best efforts in the last few years.

Witness the first Cypriot superhero (Whispers – 2013), tales of eternal love (Styx – 2008), a survival quest through a zombie-infected Cyprus (On the Brink – 2013), a gritty noir adaptation of a Greek myth (Oedipus – 2010), a man-eating newborn (Newborn – 2013) and a group of uncanny lady-criminals (Mad Dame – 2011) in what we can assure you it is just a small sample of local filmmakers aiming for the sky.

The screenings will take place at the open-air amphitheater starting 19:00 sharp; English subtitles will be displayed with all films. Some of the creators will also be available for short Q&A sessions between showings.

The film screenings are sponsored by Synergia Media.

Η φετινή έκδοση του Cyprus Comic Con γιορτάζει και τους ντόπιους παραγωγούς ταινιών, με ανοικτές προβολές που θα δείχνουν μερικές από της κορυφαίες προσπάθειες των τελευταίων χρόνων.

Δείτε τον πρώτο Κύπριο Υπερήρωα (Whispers-2013), ιστορίες παντοτινής αγάπης (Styx – 2008), μια περιπέτεια επιβίωσης μέσα από μιας μολυσμένης -από ζόμπι- Κύπρου (On the Brink – 2013), μιας σκοτεινής προσαρμογής σε στυλ Noir ενός ελληνικού μύθου (Oedipus – 2010), ένα… πεινασμένο νεογέννητο (Newborn – 2013) και μια παράξενη ομάδα από γυναίκες κακοποιούς (Mad Dame – 2011). Φιλμ που μπορούμε να σας διαβεβαιώσουμε πως είναι ένα μικρό δείγμα ότι οι ντόπιοι παραγωγοί ταινιών, έχουν υψηλές φιλοδοξίες.

Οι προβολές θα γίνουν στο ανοικτό αμφιθέατρο, ξεκινώντας στις 19:00 με όλες τις ταινίες να έχουν αγγλικούς υποτίτλους. Μερικοί από τους δημιουργούς των ταινιών θα είναι διαθέσιμοι για μικρή διάρκεια ερωταπαντήσεων μεταξύ των προβολών, οι οποίες είναι προσφορά της Synergia Media.

Dear Magic friends from far and wide!

It has been a very fun and exciting journey expanding Magic the Gathering in Cyprus for over two years now, and the time has finally come for all of us to start enjoying the benefits of our thriving community on a completely new grand scale! This journey has resulted in Isengard becoming an Advanced WPN Store recently, as we are sure many of you are already aware! For this we are thankful, first and foremost to you, the players!

This momentous occasion conveniently happens to coincide only with the biggest Gamers Event to take place on our nerd-buzzing island; the first ever Cyprus Comic Con! We are happy to announce that we have been invited by the Comic Con organizing panel to officially represent the game of Magic at the convention, and of course we have eagerly accepted! Isengard will be making a very strong presence at the event with the hope of spreading the game we so much love to an unprecedented crowd of new potential players within the best possible setting imaginable! And of course, we are planning something very special for the veteran gamers as well!

Featured Artist: N. Ubu (Tsakmakopetres)

Tsakmakopetres started out as a cartoon TV pilot two years ago, in 2012, and was also pitched as a YouTube webisode series in 2013. Tsakmakopetres aimed to be a political satire on current events, as well as a vehicle for social commentary, albeit set in Paleolithic times. Due to the high cost of animation, neither the TV series was possible, nor the YouTube version of it. Therefore, alternative ways of bringing Tsakmakopetres to life had to be sought.

After carefully reevaluating the main elements of the core story, Tsakmakopetres is now attempting the route of crowd-funding.

With the help of a publicly funded budget, N. Ubu, the creator of Tsakmakopetres and his team will complete a demo reel and part of the final film. The demo reel will in turn be pitched to various potential investors with the ultimate goal of making the first ever animated feature film from Cyprus.

As well as being a cartoonist, N. Ubu worked as a TV director in Cyprus, had short films accepted in international festivals and had two experimental music albums released by music labels abroad. He also had his music appear in a Hollywood horror film in 2012.

Οι Τσακμακόπετρες ξεκίνησαν σαν τηλεοπτικό δοκιμαστικό επεισόδιο καρτούν το 2012, και σαν ιδέα μεταφέρθηκε στο YouTube το 2013 για μια πιθανή μίνι-σειρά. Αρχικά, το περιεχόμενο αφορούσε την σατιρική αναπαράσταση συγκεκριμένων πρόσφατων πολιτικών γεγονότων διαδραματίζοντας τα στην παλαιολιθική εποχή. Λόγω του μεγάλου κόστους που χρειάζεται για την δημιουργία κινουμένων σχεδίων, η υλοποίηση της ιδέας δεν πραγματοποιήθηκε ούτε στην τηλεόραση αλλά ούτε και στο διαδίκτυο.

Μετά από μια επαναξιολόγηση της ιστορίας, αλλά και των πιθανών μέσων πραγματοποίησης της ιδέας, Οι Τσακμακόπετρες τώρα θα προσπαθήσουν να μαζέψουν μέρος του προϋπολογισμού που χρειάζεται μέσω crowd-funding (δημόσια χρηματοδότηση).

Με την βοήθεια του κοινού, ο δημιουργός των Τσακμακόπετρων, Ν. Ubu και η ομάδα του θα ολοκληρώσουν ένα δοκιμαστικό επεισόδιο και μέρος της τελικής ταινίας. Το επεισόδιο θα χρησιμοποιηθεί για την εξεύρεση πιθανών επενδυτών με απώτερο σκοπό την δημιουργία της πρώτης ταινίας κινούμενων σχεδίων της Κύπρου.

Εκτός από τον χώρο των καρτούν, ο δημιουργός των Τσακμακόπετρων έχει εργαστεί στο παρελθόν σε Κυπριακό τηλεοπτικό κανάλι σαν σκηνοθέτης. Έχουν προβληθεί ταινίες του μικρού μήκους σε διεθνή φεστιβάλ, και έχει κυκλοφορήσει δύο albums πειραματικής μουσικής σε δύο ξένες δισκογραφικές εταιρίες. Η μουσική του ήταν μέρος γνωστής ταινίας τρόμου του Hollywood το 2012.

Melissa Hekkers is a journalist and creative writer based in Nicosia, Cyprus. In 2007, Melissa began her publishing career with her first children’s book, entitled ‘Crocodile’, which also acclaimed the State Illustration Award 2007.

In 2011, Melissa published her second children’s book, ‘Flying Across Red Skies’, an attempt to work ‘backwards’, by using already made art work of a local fine artist to adapt text and eventually write a story.

A year later Melissa illustrated and wrote her first poetry edition, a first attempt at illustrating her own work, but also changing her audience from children to adults.

This year, Melissa has just released her third book titled ‘Pupa’, this time targeted to teens, an approach that came to her as a result of her experience writing for children.

All of Melissa’s books are distributed in English and Greek and are sold in Cyprus and Greece.

Aside her literary work, Melissa writes for local newspapers and magazines, as well as a personal weekly column published in The Cyprus Weekly Newspaper. Melissa also writes short stories, is a translator, copywriter and proofreader.

H Melissa Hekkers είναι δημοσιογράφος και δημιουργική συγγραφέας, η οποία έχει ως βάση της την Λευκωσία. Το 2007, η Melissa ξεκίνησε την συγγραφική της καριέρα με το πρώτο της παιδικό βιβλίο, που είχε την ονομασία “Crocodile” και το οποίο βραβεύθηκε με το State Illustration Award 2007.

In 2011, Melissa έγραψε το δεύτερο της παιδικό βιβλίο, το οποίο ονομάζεται “Flying Across Red Skies’, ως μια απόπειρά της να δουλέψει “ανάποδα”, χρησιμοποιόντας δηλαδή πρώτα έτοιμα σκίτσα από ένα ντόπιο σπουδαίο καλλιτέχη και να φτιάξει την ιστορία πάνω σε αυτά.

Την επόμενη χρονιά, η Melissa σχεδίασε και έγραψε την πρώτη της ποιητική συλλογή, ως μια απόπειρα να σχεδιάσει την δουλειά της αλλά και να αλλάξει το κοινό της από παιδιά σε ενήλικες.

Εκείνη τη χρονιά, η Melissa κυκλοφόρησε και το τρίτο της βιβλίο, το οποίο ονομάζεται ‘Pupa’ και απευθείνεται σε έφηβους, μια προσέγγιση που προέκυψε στην ίδια μετά από εμπειρία που είχε γράφοντας για παιδιά.

Όλα τα βιβλία της Melissa κυκλοφορούν στα Αγγλικά και τα Ελληνικά και είναι διαθέσιμα τόσο στην Κύπρο, όσο και την Ελλάδα.

Πέραν της λογοτεχνίας, η Melissa γράφει και σε ντόπιες εφημερίδες αλλά και περιοδικά, ενώ έχει προσωπική της στήλη που δημοσιεύεται στην εφημερίδα The Cyprus Weekly. H Melissa γράφει επίσης μικρές ιστορίες, μεταφράζει κείμενα, είναι κειμενογράφος ενώ παράλληλα επιμελείται κείμενα.

Concept Artist/Illustrator/Game Artist

(Known for high intake of Lucozade Energy drink)

Maria Christina is a Cypriot artist (AKA NightBlaze) who studied Applied Multimedia Arts, along with a minor in Illustration and Graphic Design at the University of Nicosia.maria_c_loizou

As a child she was drawn into the world of animation and gaming in part thanks to her brothers who are both avid gamers and with first hand mentor Tasos Anastasiades as her guide since the age of 15 years old.

She has worked in various fields during her studies and after, in Web Programming , Storyboard Illustration, Concept Design and Character Design. Currently, she works as a Concept Artist at Forthdesign Studio in the Hybrid Alliance Group in Cyprus, designing various Web Applications along with Touch screen Applications and Games for various platforms.

Her main focus however is to hone her skills in Game Art & Design and Character Design, expanding her knowledge in the field of the digital world of Art.

“Telling a story is never easy and bringing a character to life is even tougher. But that’s a challenge I’m willing to take on!”

Η Μαρία Χριστίνα είναι μια Κύπρια καλλιτέχνης (γνωστή και ως Nightblaze), η οποία σπούδασε Applied Multimedia Arts, μαζί με Illustration και Graphic Design στο Πανεπιστήμιο Λευκωσίας.

Από μικρό παιδί την είχε κατακτήσει ο κόσμος των κινουμένων σχεδίων και των βιντεοπαιχνιδιών, επηρεασμένη από τα αδέρφια της κι έχοντας ως πρώτο της μέντορα τον Τάσο Αναστασιάδη από ηλικία 15 χρονών.

Δούλεψε σε διάφορους τομείς κατά τη διάρκεια των σπουδών της κι έπειτα, σε προγραμματισμό ιστοσελίδων, Storyboard Illustration, Concept Design και Character Design. Αυτή τη στιγμή, εργάζεται ως Concept Artist στο Forthdesign Studio του Hybrid Alliance Group στην Κύπρο, κάνοντας διάφορα Web Applications μαζί με Touch Screen Applications αλλά και παιχνίδια σε διάφορες πλατφόρμες.

Ο κύριος της στόχος όμως είναι να βελτιωθεί στο Game Art & Design, όπως επίσης στο Character Design, αυξάνοντας έτσι τις γνώσεις της στον τομέα της ψηφιακής Τέχνης.
