Artist Profile: Eugenia Koumaki

Comic book artist, Eugenia Koumaki will be joining us at this year’s Artists’ Alley!

Eugenia was born in 1990. The doctors did not realise in time that in her veins flowed ink instead of blood, and when they did, it was already too late. She had her mind set on being an artist. After lots of sweat, ink and tears, she now has under her belt the following achievements: An honours Ba in comic-cartoon-animation, fanzine publications, pencil art for a story in Womanthology by IDW, participation in live sketching events and intrigues, art for backdrops for the concert hall musical “Kiss me Kate”, her comic “The great coffee conspiracy” for Comicdom Press, (i.e., her first personal issue except for teen angst), artwork for Mike Carey’s story in Femme Magnifique, and finally, her latest comic, “Hubris“, published with Webcomics publishing house.

For the time being, she is sketching on the side of her world domination plans, while drinking coffee and wondering why on earth not enough people know about the flamboyant cuttlefish.

PopGen Asia Participant: HallyuCY

Join HallyuCY’s Community!

Calling all K-pop, K-drama and asian culture fans! We are happy to announce that HallyuCY, the growing local community dedicated to the spread of South Korean pop culture in Cyprus, will be returning to CCC17!

‘Hallyu’ (which literally translates to “flow of Korea”) also known as ‘The Korean Wave‘ is a neologism referring to the increase in popularity of South Korean culture in the rest of the world since the late 1990s. Some aspects of South Korean pop culture that have contributed to its popularity, include K-pop musicK-dramas (TV-series), the Korean language and cuisineanimated comics and filmstechnology.

HallyuCY organise a number of gatherings throughout the year! Some of these include arts and crafts sessions, cooking sessions, Korean karaoke where the members sing their hearts out with no shame (!), Hangul (Korean alphabet) learning sessions, K-pop dance cover meetings and cozy Korean film nights! In the online Facebook group, members can post about their favourite K-pop music, K-drama and films, share and exchange knowledge about different aspects of South Korean culture and generally bond and form friendships with likeminded individuals.

Some of the group’s future goals include growing the Hallyu community in Cyprus, to inform and educate interested individuals about South Korean culture and to hopefully one day organise larger scale events, such as K-pop parties and Korean Cinema screenings!

SAD_G: HallyuCY’s Official Dance Team

HallyuCY has had a dance group since 2014, when some of the members came together to prepare a performance for the first Cyprus Comic Con. Since then, the dance group has expanded, members have changed, and its goals have solidified. The name SAD-G (Super Awesome Dance Group) came up after the end of Cyprus Comic Con 2016, when its members decided that it was time to include more people in their group and keep dancing! Now, the team consists of seven members, with more joining at every practice session depending on which choreographies they are interested in learning! Even though originally the team was formed for the sole reason of performing at Comic Con, they now perform at various other projects, such as Random Dance Challenges, dance covers, and dance tributes to K-pop groups. They are a multifandom group that doesn’t favour girl groups over boy groups, or vice versa. They cover a variety of choreographies, ranging from bubblegum pop such as Twice and Red Velvet, to more electronic and hip-hop sounds such as BTS and NCT. This progress has been possible through the expansion of HallyuCY – and of course the many K-pop fans they meet at Cyprus Comic Con every year!

Artist Profile: Claudia Ilona Moussoulos

Talented 3D artist Claudia Ilona Moussoulos is returning to Cyprus Comic Con’s Artists’ Alley!

Claudia’s journey with art started ever since she can remember. As a child she would ask her parents to draw her a Pokemon character and she would sit for hours scrapping a dozen papers to get a sketch close to the perfection of her parents drawing. Years later, she competed and received many prizes and a commendation for her work in international competitions for schools in Europe. With tremendous determination for achievement, she joined the School of Art at Thalia Pontiki, completed the O-levels in Art & Design at age 13 with distinction and later at age 15, A-levels of Art & Design again with distinction.

In October 2009, Claudia had her first painting exhibition titled ‘The First Step’ at the age of 16. The opening was honored by Mrs. Elsi Christofia, wife of the then President of Cyprus. During her time of drawing and producing work for the A-levels of Art & Design, she chose the subject ‘Movement’, which she believes sparked the beginning of her career. At that time, she was analyzing the styles of different artists, combining them with her own to produce a final study, which led her directly to Animation. At 17 years of age, Claudia went for a summer course in Milan at ‘Nuova Accademia Di Belle Arti’ to learn the art of ‘Stop-Motion’. At the end of her school years, she was accepted on a course in Bournemouth, U.K. to study Computer Visualization and Animation, where she chose to combine her passion and further education.

Visit Claudia’s website to see more images of her work.

Currently Claudia is the Lead CG Generalist and Concept Artist at Ascanio Entertainment. She deals foremost with 3D modelling and concept art. As CG Generalist, she has a range of tasks that include rigging, texturing, animation, rendering, effects and other creative things. She works closely with the team and Creative Director to create what you experience today in the game; CrashForce. As a passionate gamer and artist, she was always driven to create. She has long hoped for the opportunity to be on the creative side of gaming, so that she can exercise her creativity in a positive environment. Additionally, she also works freelance, and her goal is to create products and services that delight consumers and drive innovation across organizations, by studying and combining multiple styles with her touch of extra twist!

Previous freelance projects include designs for indoor & outdoor areas of an office, company logo designs, 3D models for game development, concept art, book and album covers and more. In her free time, she likes to play games (obviously) and sometimes meetup with other talented artists to draw and brainstorm. During the course of the past year and a half however, she decided to join creative forces with her partner, S.P. (Savvas P.) a talented musician, who showed her some of his lyrics to the album ‘Book of Life‘, he and ‘The Kid’ (Deniel Pavlovsky) were creating at the time. At that point, they decided to transform the world and stories within the music into comic book form. Claudia creates the artwork, while S.P. does the writing. The first comic, which was published and brought to light at the previous Cyprus Comic Con, was ‘Charlie the Scarecrow‘. This year S.P. will be accompanying Claudia at her booth, where they will both be signing their material.

At this years event, Claudia will be presenting sketches, print-outs of her artwork, original comic books, canvas paintings, posters of original comic characters and other artwork, the ‘Book of Life’ music album and knitted little monsters – like tiny little adorable kittens that don’t quite fit with the above material, but she has made too many and her partner won’t let her keep them!

Special Guest: Alex Reiss

Photography: Pugoffka

Cyprus Comic Con is proud to announce that our third Cosplay Special Guest is the talented Alex Reiss!

Alex (Alexandra Pankova) started cosplaying in 2010 and her first awards were for team stage plays. She enjoyed making costumes as well as acting on stage. Around 2013, she decided to concentrate on solo performances and on developing her crafting skills further. She learned a lot about working with various materials, starting from the simplest ones, such as plywood and papier-mache, to modern thermoplastics and advanced technologies like 3D print.

In 2014, her solo costumes started receiving recognition as well as awards and her biggest accomplishment so far is receiving 3rd place at MCM London ComicCon Eurocosplay in 2016 (which she says, won’t be the last!).

At the moment, she continues making new costumes, traveling around the world and sharing her experience and expertise with fellow cosplayers, through lectures and tutorials.

You can follow Alex on FacebookWorldCosplayDeviantArt and Patreon!
